Workshop on Research-Based Preservice
Teacher Preparation:
Using Video and Written Student Work to Support the Mathematical
Preparation of Teachers
Eva
Thanheiser, Rutgers University
Randy
Philipp, San Diego State University
In this workshop, we will examine use of children's mathematical
thinking to support the preparation of mathematics teachers. We
will share results of a large-scale study on integrating mathematics
and pedagogy (IMAP) and discuss how video, written student work, and
student interviews may support our teaching and research.
Although video of a sixth grader will be used to ground our discussion,
time will be allocated for participants to share ways they use their
own students' mathematical thinking in their teaching and research and
to meet according to their levels of interest (elementary, secondary,
or undergraduate). If participants wish to engage further in
discussions of their own teaching or research, we will organize
sessions for the following day via the announcement page.
