The following rules of engagement emerged from research data collected by observing teachers' behaviors as they participated in the content courses. Focusing on these rules became a common thread in the content courses and PLCs.

  • Speaking with meaning
Express complete ideas, focus on quantities and relationships, provide rationale for actions and make connections.

  • Intellectual integrity
Base your conjectures on a logical foundation; don't pretend to understand when you don't.

  • Sense making
Persist in making sense of problems, your thinking and your colleagues' thinking.

  • Respecting the learning process of colleagues
Allow your colleagues the opportunity to think, reflect, and construct meaning.
