Each question in The National Doctoral Program Survey is scored numerically using a likert scale from 0 (worst) to 100 (best). Questions for which an affirmative response expresses a positive opinion about a program are scored as follows:
| Response | Score |
| Strongly Agree | 100 points |
| Agree | 75 points |
| Disagree | 25 points |
| Strongly Disagree | 0 points |
"Don't know," "Not applicable," and "No response" are not included when determining the score. For questions for which an affirmative response expresses a negative opinion, the scale is reversed (i.e., "Strongly Agree" is 0 points and "Strongly Disagree" is 100 points).
The survey questions are grouped into 9 sections that consist of eight broad classes of best practice recommendations and a section on overall student satisfaction. Scores for each section are computed by averaging scores for the questions in the section. An additional Overall Recommended Practices score is computed by averaging the scores of all sections other than Student Satisfaction.
Letter grades for each questions and section are assigned according to the scale below:
| Grade | Range of Scores | Interpretation |
| A+ | 95-100 | Respondents strongly agree with positive statements about the department |
| A | 85-94 | |
| A- | 80-84 | |
| B+ | 75-79 | Respondents agree with positive statements about the department |
| B | 65-74 | |
| B- | 60-64 | |
| C+ | 55-59 | Respondents agree and disagree with positive statements about the department in roughly equal numbers |
| C | 45-54 | |
| C- | 40-44 | |
| D+ | 35-39 | Respondents disagree with positive statements about the department |
| D | 25-34 | |
| D- | 20-24 | |
| F+ | 15-19 | Respondents strongly disagree with positive statements about the department |
| F | 5-14 | |
| F- | 0-4 |
Green indicates that a grade is
higher than the average grade for similar
programs.
Red text indicates that a grade is lower than the average grade for similar
programs.
The positive responses score represents the number of responses expressing positive opinions about a program as a percentage of all responses expressing an opinion about the program, either positive or negative.
