New knowledge for better teaching and learning of science, mathematics and engineering

NSB Calls for Broad Changes in STEM

The two central challenges identified in the commission’s report are ensuring that STEM curriculum is coherent from grade to grade from pre-K through college and delivering enough well-prepared teachers to classrooms throughout the country.  Among the elements of the plan:

  • Creation of a national council to coordinate improvements at the local, state and national levels. The commission said earlier reports failed to achieve lasting impact because no national authority was empowered to drive their recommendations.
  • National guidelines for school curricula, with final control of course content to remain with local school officials
  • Voluntary national certification of teachers in mathematics and science, with new provisions that would allow teachers to take certification and accrued benefits with them if they moved to a job in a new state
