MNS--Masters of Natural Science in Mathematics Education

In collaboration with the Colleges of Education, Engineering and Arts & Sciences, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers an MNS option for high school teachers with a significant mathematical background. (See prerequisites.) The program of study follows the guidelines for the MNS degree (24 credit hours) in mathematics and an additional 12 hours of coordinated study at the graduate level in a related discipline (science, engineering, middle school mathematics education, and/or secondary education). The program of study, including courses in mathematics and related subjects, is selected with the recommendation of the student's supervisory committee. This supervisory committee consists of two faculty members of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and one faculty member in the related area. The program of study consists of a minimum of 36 semester hours.

Prerequisites: A Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a closely related area with a 3.00 grade point average and course work in linear algebra and advanced calculus. (MAT 342 and MAT 370 or equivalent)
Foreign Language Requirements. None
Culminating Experience. Completion of a school project to investigate the effectiveness of some aspect of the
teachers’ mathematics instruction. A written final report and presentation of the project will be required.
